An endocrine organ in insects consisting of a central bundle of axons enveloped by cortical cells. Axons from the corpus cardiacum enter the corpus allatum. Most axons associated with the corpus cardiacum have their cell bodies in the pars intercerebralis. The cortical cells and many of the axons contain numerous neurosecretory spheres (q.v.).
