Quick Reference

The late Iron Age tribe living in the northern part of the Welsh Marches of western England and Wales at the time of the Roman conquest in ad 43. Their tribal capital was possibly at the Wrekin, Shropshire, some 6 km east of Wroxeter (Viroconium) where the civitas capital was established in the later 1st century ad. The settlement pattern of the area is dominated by substantial hillforts in the late 1st millennium bc and there seems to have been little contact with the tribes living further to the southeast.
