He developed his interest in English literature while at Oxford, and amassed a large library, with particular strengths in early English printed books and medieval MSS. His library was sold at Sotheby's in eight book auctions between 28 July 1868 and 25 June 1873; another sale took place in Manchester in 1876. These realized more than £20,000.
