The steroid hormones secreted by the adrenal cortex that regulate carbohydrate metabolism (glucocorticoids such as cortisol and cortisone) and salt/water balance (minerocorticoids, e.g. aldosterone). The production of corticosteroids is regulated by adrenocorticotropin (ACTH). Glucocorticoids are important natural anti-inflammatory agents.
