Sectioning through the bone cortex leaving the remaining bone, periosteum, and vascular tissues intact. It is a technique that can be used on alveolar bone to assist in the orthodontic treatment of palatally impacted teeth by weakening the resistance of the bone during the application of orthodontic forces. It is particularly important in distraction osteogenesis (osteodistraction).
