A small subsidiary settlement associated with a charterhouse, mainly occupied by lay brothers and worked as a farm to provide food and wealth both for itself and the monastery to which it was connected. Facilities for worship and domestic life were provided within the settlement. In general, coureries were situated fairly close to their mother charterhouse.
