Also known as Assembly of Experts. Elected to advise the Revolutionary Council (dissolved 1980) and faqih (chief legal scholar) in the Islamic Republic of Iran. Dominated by clerics. Drafted a constitution that was ratified in 1979, establishing the authority of clerics in management and guidance of the republic. Made permanent in 1983 to select Khomeini's successor and oversee the orderly transfer of power.
