A violent and immediate seizure of state power, usually by armed forces, and with the implication of being undemocratic and unconstitutional. Successful examples occurred in Greece in 1967, Chile in 1973, and in Turkey in 1980. An unsuccessful attempt was made at a coup d’état in Russia in 1990. The best overview will be found in Edward Luttwak's Coup d’État (1968).
