1. A membrane transport system in which movement of one molecule or ion down an electrochemical gradient is linked to that of another molecule in the same or the opposite direction. See antiport; cotransport; countertransport; symport.

2. Used rather inaccurately of a controlled transport system, e.g. one that is regulated by G proteins.
