A characteristic genetically determined behavioral pattern involving the production and reception of an elaborate sequence of visual, auditory, and chemical stimuli by the male and female prior to mating. Such rituals are interpreted as ensuring that mating will occur only between the most fit individuals of the opposite sex and the same species.
