(1904–1957), Mexican artist and archaeologist. He was born in Mexico City, into a wealthy and politically prominent family, and he died in the same city. At various stages in his life, Covarrubias was a caricaturist, book illustrator, muralist, writer, ethnographer, archaeologist, collector of pre-Columbian antiquities, teacher, and ballet director. Along with his American colleague Matthew W. Stirling, he was the codiscoverer of the Olmec civilization. [See Stirling, Matthew W.]
