(1870–1949) English celestial mechanician, born in India. He was concerned in particular with the motion of the nodes of the Moon's orbit and its secular acceleration. Cowell's method for calculating the motions of mutually gravitationally interacting bodies was used by him and A. C. D. Crommelin to pinpoint the return of Halley's Comet in 1910.
