(1811–81) Bodley's librarian 1860–81. After early work at the British Museum, he joined the Bodleian staff as sub-librarian in 1839, devoting much time and palaeographical skill to the quarto catalogues of classical MSS. He succeeded Bandinel as librarian, improving accessibility, devising a unified catalogue of printed books, making an additional reading room, improving placing, and incorporating the Radcliffe Library into the Bodleian.
