A model, proposed by Sir David Cox in 1972, for the lifetime of, for example, industrial components or medical patients. The model has the form

ln{h(t)}= α + xβ,

where h(t) is the hazard rate at time t, α is a parameter, β is a column vector of slope parameters, and x′ is a row vector of values of background variables.
