Amer. conductor, musicologist, and author. Skilled interpreter of mus. of Webern, Schoenberg, Berg, and especially of Stravinsky with whom he was on terms of intimate friendship, collaborating with him in recordings and in 6 vols. of conversations and memoirs. Encouraged Stravinsky to compose in serial method. Has also written Stravinsky: Chronicle of a Friendship (1972), and several other Stravinsky vols. Conducted Amer. première of Berg's Lulu (3‐act version), Santa Fe 1979, having cond. the 2‐act version there in 1963.
