Quick Reference

An iron band on the outer end of a bowsprit fitted with eyes to take the bowsprit shrouds and the bobstay. In larger sailing vessels where a jib-boom is rigged the crance carries an additional opening through which the jib-boom is traversed, serving also to hold its heel firmly in place on the bowsprit. It is sometimes known as crans-iron. For illus. see bowsprit.
