A family of low affinity, calcium-binding, multiple EF-hand proteins that includes reticulocalbins, calumenin, and other endoplasmic proteins. They appear to have a range of functions in the secretory pathway, have chaperone activity, and are involved with signal transduction. They are thought to be potential disease biomarkers or targets for therapeutic intervention. NB Sometimes ‘CERC’ for Cab-45, Erc-55, reticulocalbin, and calumenin.
