An infolding of the inner membrane of a mitochondrion that projects into the matrix of the organelle. Cristae bear numerous mushroom-shaped bodies, variously called respiratory assemblies, stalk bodies, or elementary particles, which contain certain of the enzymes involved in ATP synthesis.
