Quick Reference

(1927–9)

A widespread popular rebellion which was largely confined to the Mexican states of Colima, Jalisco, Michoacán and Morelos. It was led by members of the old pre‐revolutionary elites, but gained its popular impetus under the banner of Roman Catholicism which was opposed to the new, secular state as established by the 1917 constitution. The revolutionary state under Calles and his successors proved too weak to defeat the movement, and was forced to accept a compromise whereby the Church was allowed to conduct religious instruction.anticlericalism
