critical learning period

Quick Reference

The crucial time in the development of an organism when the ideal combination of sensory, motor, psychological, and motivational factors is present for learning a specified behaviour. Critical learning periods have been studied mainly on animals other than humans, but many coaches recognize that successful skill attainment is dependent on the timeliness of instruction. In psychology, the critical learning period has special reference to imprinting, and is the period when imprinting is most likely to occur.
