Crockford began publishing as early as 1843 in association with Edward William Cox, issuing such periodicals as Law Times, Clerical Journal, The Critic, and The Field. However, he is best known for publishing the Clerical Directory, which appeared in weekly numbers (beginning 1855) and a full edition (1858). Known as Crockford's Clerical Directory from 1860, it was published by Oxford University Press from 1921 until 1985.
