Cromwell's budget of 1433, the first by any English treasurer, was the high point of distinguished service to Henry VI. He helped impeach the king's favourite William de la Pole, duke of Suffolk, in 1450. Although respected, his fortune was amassed partly by extortion and used to endow Tattershall College.
