practised as a doctor for some years before devoting himself to an extremely successful career as a middle‐brow novelist. His best‐known novels (e.g. The Stars Look Down, 1935; The Citadel, 1937) combine in their subject‐matter the appeal of medicine and of mining, reflecting his own early experiences as a doctor in South Wales.
