A clinical procedure undertaken by surgically removing or repositioning some of the marginal gingival tissue surrounding the crown of a tooth. It is indicated to improve aesthetics e.g. by correcting an uneven gingival contour or to facilitate restorative procedures such as increasing the crown height, accessing subgingival caries, or to relocate margins of restorations that are impinging on the biological width.
