Quick Reference

A prophage that has lost certain functions essential for lytic growth and the production of infectious particles. However, these defective viruses still retain some functional genes, and therefore they can rescue mutations in related bacteriophages by recombining with them to generate viable hybrids. See Escherichia coli.
