Applied to a very fine aggregate of crystals in an igneous rock, and to minerals in which the individual crystals are too fine to be distinguished even under a petrological microscope. They will produce a diffraction pattern with X-rays. Rapid cooling of a magma as it is extruded as a lava often produces cryptocrystalline aggregates of minerals.
