Quick Reference

The darkest of the methyl violet dyes (Gentian violet; methyl violet 10B), used in Gram staining, for the metachromatic staining of amyloid, and as an enhancer for bloody fingerprints. Also a pH indicator, turning yellow below pH 1.8. Its use to treat skin infections is inadvisable since it is probably carcinogenic.
