Stockholm-based company founded by the Swedish Government in 1967 to provide a platform for the choreography of Birgit Cullberg. It was directed by Cullberg until 1985, and by her son, the choreographer Mats Ek, from 1985 to 1993. As well as works by Cullberg and Ek, the repertoire features choreography by Ulf Gadd, Elsa Marianne von Rosen, Flindt, Cunningham, Ailey, Jooss, Béjart, Bruce, Kylián, and more recently by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Johan Inger, and Crystal Pite. Carolyn Carlson succeeded Ek as artistic director (1993–5) and was succeeded by Lene Wennergren-Juras (1995–2003) and Johan Inger (2003–08) whose works for the company have included Point of Eclipse (2007) and Position of Elsewhere (2009). After two years of being run by a temporary artistic director Anna Grip was appointed to the post in 2010 with a policy of expanding the company's performance activities into gallery installation and film. Ek continues to be Cullberg's principal guest choreographer.
