Worked for Decca Records 1946–54, Capitol Records, USA, 1954–5, Decca 1955–67, being assoc. with stereophonic developments. Prod. first complete recording of Wagner's Ring (with Solti conducting), 1958–65, and wrote book about it, Ring Resounding (1967). Supervised over 30 opera recordings, incl. Solti's of Salome and Elektra, and Britten's. Head of Mus. BBC tv 1967–75, during which period several of Britten's operas were televised. Author of book on Rachmaninov and an autobiography, Putting the Record Straight, pubd. posthumously 1981. OBE 1966.
