An intense interest in and devotion to the development of a body that is not obese, but is shapely and slender. The cult of slenderness is a manifestation of the wider ideology of shapism in which definitions of the desirable body image are constructed by groups who have a vested interest in promoting the ideal shape of women as slim and that for men as slim muscularity.
