Australian Labor statesman, Prime Minister (1941–45). He led the Labor party from 1935–1945. As Premier during World War II, he mobilized Australian resources to meet the danger of Japanese invasion, laid down the groundwork for the postwar economy, and introduced various welfare measures. Curtin died while in office.
