Welsh poet and critic, born in Carmarthen, educated at University College, Swansea. His collections include Album (1974); The Deerslayers (1977); Preparations (1980), which contains several moving and intimate poems commemorating his father's death; Letting Go (1983); Selected Poems 1970–85 (1986); and Heaven's Gate (2001). Many of his poems are deeply rooted in Welsh culture and landscape, particularly Pembrokeshire, and some are inspired by animals, the natural world, and domestic life. In later work his references become more international, his subjects widening to include historical incidents and the Holocaust. Wales, the Imagined Nation (1986) is an examination of Welsh national and cultural identity.
