custody record

Quick Reference

A record kept by the custody officer at a detention facility of every person brought there under arrest or arrested there having attended voluntarily. Whilst not required by the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE), the Home Office advises that it would be wise to open a custody record for persons detained but not under arrest, e.g. people detained for court on a production order. PACE prescribes a very long list of matters that should be recorded on the custody record relating to the reception, detention, and treatment of a person throughout their time in police or other detention. The custody record must be available for inspection by a detained person or his solicitor.
