B. c.1120, s. of Owain Gwynedd and an unknown woman; acc. 1170; d. 1174.
After the death of Owain Gwynedd in 1170 his sons, legitimate and otherwise, disputed the succession. Cynan had established a semi-independent territory in Meirionnydd in 1147, and this seems to have been the area confirmed to him in a brief understanding reached by the sons in 1171.
