Quick Reference

An island off Cape Malea (Peloponnese) with murex in abundance (see purple). Perhaps c.550 bc Sparta seized it from Argos, installing a garrison and governor; its inhabitants became perioikoi. An obvious strategic threat to Sparta, ‘better sunk beneath the sea’ said Chilon, it was captured by Nicias and held for Athens from 424 to 421. In myth it was the birthplace of Aphrodite, who had a sanctuary there.
