A family of oxidases (EC 220.127.116.11) of the cytochrome b type. The nomenclature is systematic and based roughly on sequence. The genes and proteins are named ‘Cyp’ suffixed by family, subfamily, and specific identifiers, e.g. CYP3A5 and CYP3A7 are two genes in the 3A subfamily that encode closely related proteins (CYP3A5, CYP3A7). Members of the Cyp2, Cyp3, and Cyp5 families are primarily involved in xenobiotic detoxification in the liver, others are involved in core metabolic functions such as steroid biosynthesis. Variation in the P450 enzymes can have major effects on the rate of drug metabolism.
