Quick Reference

A eukaryotic cell containing two genetically different types of a specific organelle; the term is an abbreviation for cytoplasmically heterozygous. For example, in the single-celled alga Chlamydomonas, the frequency of rare cytohets (containing chloroplasts from both parents) can be greatly increased by treatment of one parent (mating type +) with ultraviolet light. See mitotic segregation.
