An order of Gram-negative, rod-shaped or filamentous bacteria in which at least some stages are capable of a gliding motility when in contact with a solid surface. They are found in soil and various aquatic habitats. Some bacteria often included in the Cytophagales are alternatively regarded as apochlorotic cyanobacteria.
