Prisoner of war and again imprisoned for political beliefs 1950–3. Won Liszt Prize 1955 (first non-composer to do so). Escaped from Hung. during 1956 uprising, settling in Fr. Virtuoso interpreter of 19th cent. repertory. Founded Concours International de Piano, Versailles, 1968, for young pianists.
