Opera in prol. and 6 scenes by Peri to lib. by Ottavio Rinuccini. Comp. 1594–8. Generally supposed to be the earliest opera, but the mus. is lost. Prod. in Corsi's house, Florence, 1598. (See Camerata.) The same lib. was also set by Corsi himself (2 fragments survive), Gagliano (1607), and Schütz (lost, 1627). Operas on the same theme were comp. by A. Scarlatti (1700), Astorga (1709), Mulè (1928), and R. Strauss (1936–7, see under Daphne).
