In the Bible, a national deity of the ancient Philistines, represented as a fish-tailed man. The name comes via Latin and Greek from Hebrew dāḡōn, perhaps from dāḡān ‘corn’, but said (according to folk etymology) to be from dāḡ ‘fish’.
