Dramatic adviser, Deutsches Th., Göttingen, 1950–8; mus. critic, Stuttgarter Zeitung, 1960–2; on staff Univ. of Kiel mus. dept., 1962–6; prof. of mus. history, Berlin Technical Univ. from 1967. Scholar with range of interests from Josquin to present-day. Author of several books on Wagner, incl. Richard Wagner's Music Dramas (1979), ed.-in-chief, complete edn. of Wagner's works (pubn. begun 1970), contributor to several mus. encyclopaedias, and co-ed. of 4 mus. periodicals. Also wrote Schoenberg and the New Music (1978, Eng. trans. 1988), and Beethoven and his Time (1987, Eng. trans. 1991).
