(1830–83), German-born lens designer who emigrated to England in 1851 and eventually joined Andrew Ross (1798–1859), one of the leading lens and optical instrument makers in the country. He married Ross's daughter and later inherited some of Ross's fortune; in 1860 he established his own firm in London.
