John Dalrymple was born at Cranstoun (Scotland) and died on 26 February 1810. He was educated at Edinburgh University, and at Trinity Hall, Cambridge (Fellow Commoner, 1746). He was admitted advocate at the Scottish Bar in 1748. In 1771 he became fourth Baronet of Cranstoun. He was Baron of the Exchequer between 1776 and 1807. He was a member of the Edinburgh Select Society, the membership of which included David Hume and Adam Smith.
