Toronto-based modern dance company. It was founded in 1974 as a co-operative, by a group of dancers and choreographers that included Andrea Ciel Smith and Marcy Radly. Initially it performed to local audiences with a repertory featuring Canadian choreographers such as Kudelka and C. House as well as works by Lubovitch, P. Taylor, Cohan, and others. During the late 1980s it suffered a loss of direction and Serge Bennathan was appointed director and resident choreographer in 1990 to focus its identity and raise its international profile. Bennathan created many works for the company including the full-length C'est beau ça, la vie (mus. collage, Michael J. Baker, 1998). His successor as director and resident choreographer was Michael Trent, appointed in 2006.
