(1306–54) became Doge of Venice in 1343. An acquaintance of Petrarch, he reformed the chancery, codified Venetian law, and ordered the commune's archives. His chronicle makes an important contribution to Venetian historiography. A patron of the San Marco basilica, he was the last Doge to be buried there.
