(bapt. London, 17 Dec. 1691; d after 1754). English portrait painter who had a considerable practice in London in the 1730s and 1740s (he took over Kneller's studio in 1731). He is a minor figure, but his best work has a lively Rococo charm and he is notable as one of the first English artists to paint conversation pieces (The Price Family, c.1728, Met. Mus., New York).
