Ger. composer and cellist. Cellist in Mannheim Orch. 1778–83, in Munich 1783–90. Kapellmeister, Stuttgart 1807–12, Karlsruhe from 1812. Friend and patron of Weber, putting several of his operas into production. One of first opera conds. to cond. from rostrum rather than from kbd. Comp. 15 operas, incl. one on subject of Turandot (1816), vc. conc., 4 fl. concs., hn. conc., and several works for wind quintet.
