Afghan minister of interior (1949–50) and prime minister (1953–63). Encouraged social reforms and in 1959 permitted women to abandon the veil and encouraged their participation in the economic life of Afghanistan. Deposed his cousin, King Zahir, in July 1973 and was president of the Republic of Afghanistan until he and his family were executed in April 1978.
