Son of the Mughal emperor Shāh Jahān (1592–1666). He regarded classical Hindu Sanskritic teachings and the Qur'ān as mystically compatible, and, in collaboration with Hindu paṇḍits, made a Persian translation of 52 of the Upaniṣads. This was subsequently ‘translated’ into Latin by Anquetil du Perron, and so conveyed to Europe.
